Important things to do after the move

May 21, 2018 by Editor

To move house is not an easy job. Many people feel that once after the movers leave the home, all the work is done. However, that is not the truth. The process of settling and unpacking can take days. It can also be chaotic and stressful if you don’t know how to do it. Especially in situations when you had to move in a short time. If you need to move quickly, contact our last minute moving pros. In our guide, you will see what are the things we advise you to do once you move in, basically what are the things to do after the move. Don’t worry, just make a plan and stay organized, so you can enjoy your new home as soon as possible!

Check the boxes you have delivered

You spent a lot of time packing, and you think you found the reliable moving company? Well maybe that is true, but checking the boxes is a good idea anyway, and one of the most important things to do after the move. After the movers leave your home, check the boxes lying on your room floors. Open each one and see if the items inside are all the items you have on the inventory list you made before packing. If something is not there, or it is damaged – call the moving company and report the situation. Remember, if you wait for too long, it might be too late. The situations when you can file a complaint against a moving company are:

  • boxes are delivered late to your home – you moved and you have no boxes around you? Something is wrong;
  • the items are moved, but damaged because the movers handled them irresponsibly and did a sloppy job;
  • the moving company asked you to pay much more money than it was arranged in the quote;
  • treated you badly, tried to do any kind of scam on you, etc.

If you haven’t already decided how to move, and chose a reliable moving company, ask your Toronto movers to help you out.

Find a Job

If you already haven’t sorted out your work situation, it is the perfect time to find a job, as one of the things to do after the move. In the meantime, it is good to have an amount of money saved, so you can use it until you find a new job. Do an online research of jobs in areas you are willing to work in. However, if you can’t find something you really like, don’t wait, but take some less interesting job, and you will change it easily later. If you are moving for work, or you can relocate to the new offices of your old company then you can skip this step. However, it also takes time to adjust to the new office and meet with the new co-workers.

Deal with your vehicle

If you have a car, and you move to another city or state, it is important to do all the necessary work related to it. This means that you need to register your car at a DMV office. But be careful and do some research, since different states have different rules about cars and registration. Deal with the car insurance as well, if you need to change one after the move. If you live in a building now, take care of the parking spot, too. You may need to pay your own parking spot, and if you live in a house, you probably have one in front of it.

Find a school for your kids

If you moved to another city with your children, and they are a school age, finding a new school immediately is one of the extremely important things to do after the move. This way they can continue going to school, meet new friends and adjust to the new life. Be sure to find a reputable school, so do some research beforehand about the schools in the area you just moved to. If you don’t know which school is the best for you, ask your family or friends for recommendations. There are also online reviews of schools on the internet, so be sure to check that as well. After gathering a couple of choices, visit each school with your child. Talk to the principal and the teachers, and show the school to your kid. They need to feel comfortable and safe and like the place where they are going to spend most of their days.

Find a family physician/healthcare provider

This is also one of the most important things to do after the move. Don’t wait too long before finding a family doctor. You never know when something is going to come up, or how your family member will react to the move, stress, change of climate. It is true that the doctor you visited for years is not there anymore, but finding a new one is very important.

Meeting new people is also one of the vital things to do after the move

Moving to another city or state means you don’t see your old neighbors anymore. You have your old friends, but you can’t see them that often. That’s why it is important to start meeting new people as soon as you arrive. Meet your new neighbors so they can share their thoughts on the neighborhood and maybe give you some advice and help. If you are new at the office, don’t be afraid to say hello to your new co-workers, since you are going to spend your days together in the future. New people will help you adjust to the new situation and settle easily. However, don’t forget your old friends and ask them to come and visit you at your new home.

Explore the city

Meeting new people is one thing, but meeting the city you are about to live is also very important. Take your time to go around the neighborhood, and visit the city center. Find out what is the fastest route to your office or your kid’s school by driving around. Check what is the most popular supermarket in the area so you can go your first grocery shopping. See if there are some cool places nearby, like parks, restaurants, etc. Don’t just stay home and miss your old city. Explore!
